Hockey In Mexico?
from Eric Gomez of ESPN, MEXICO CITY -- In a sports bar tucked between the Roma Sur and Narvarte neighborhoods on a recent weekday night, a dry erase board lists the top three events available on its multiple screens. Save for a very small minority, every patron is there to watch the main event, a World Cup qualifier between Mexico and Panama. Also listed is an NBA contest, with the Chicago Bulls battling the Portland Trail Blazers. And the third event on the board is the NHL clash b...

The Cost Of A Rental Player
from Jonathan Willis of Sportsnet, Complex deals are sometimes made at the NHL trade deadline, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Instead, the most common trades made are simple ones: a pending free agent for some combination of draft picks and/or prospects. It’s easy to see why these kinds of trades are popular. Bad teams with no chance at the playoffs can convert their departing players into something valuable. Middling teams can improve their chances of clinchi...

via the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta underwent successful hand surgery, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford. Penguins head team physician Dr. Dharmesh Vyas of the UPMC Sports Medicine team performed the surgery. Maatta is expected to be out of the lineup for six weeks, after injuring his left hand in Thursday's game against Winnipeg.

Did The Players Want Michel Therrien Out?
from Brendan Kelly of the Montreal Gazette, I’ll throw out another query at you. Did the players give up on Therrien? Is that what happened? Is that why the kindly ol’ coach was fired even though his record during the past five years was 194-121-37 and his team was still sitting in the No. 1 spot in the NHL’s Atlantic Division? If the Habs players did indeed stop playing for their coach, then maybe all is right in the world for Canadiens fans and, beginning Saturday...

What Do You Think Of The NBC Sports Group Studio Show?
The NHL gets a ton of exposure from this NBC deal but the quality of the studio show is by far the worst of the major sports. Embarrassing. — Mike Harrington (@ByMHarrington) February 17, 2017   Harrington has more tweets on this topic, mostly Sabres related...

Bad Goaltending, Bad Coaching?
from Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star, It’s probably not a coincidence that when Julien was fired by the Boston Bruins last week, ending the longest tenure in the league, his exit overlapped with a rare moment in recent Bruins history. For the first eight of Julien’s 10 seasons with the Bruins, the team’s save percentage was never worse than seventh-best in the league. Four times it ranked No. 1. Three times Boston boasted the Vezina Trophy winner as the league’s ...
